“Before you know it, he’s heading back to the dugout”: Michael Vaughan criticizes struggling Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian T20I captain, faced another disappointing performance in the ongoing five-match T20I series against England. In the third T20I in Rajkot, he was dismissed for just 14 off seven balls, contributing little as India fell short by 26 runs, marking their first loss in the series.
Former England cricketer, Michael Vaughan, offered his perspective on what it means to be “aggressive” in T20 cricket. He emphasized the importance of selecting the right balls and moments to attack, rather than attempting to hit every delivery for a boundary. Vaughan also pointed out that Suryakumar Yadav hasn’t been making significant contributions recently.
Vaughan shared his thoughts on Cricbuzz Live, stating, “When we talk about being aggressive all the time, it’s about choosing the right balls to attack. You can’t aim for a boundary every time. India, as world champions, need their top players to be in form.”
He continued, “The key to regaining form is spending time at the crease. Right now, Suryakumar Yadav is hitting a few good shots, but before you know it, he’s back in the dugout without making a significant impact.”
Vaughan then suggested, “If there was ever a time for him to take a step back, slow down from fifth gear to third, and give himself the opportunity to settle in, it’s now. The target wasn’t 210-220; it was a reasonable chase, and playing sensibly would’ve been the way to go.”
India failed to chase down the target of 172, managing only 145/9 after 20 overs. Hardik Pandya was the top scorer for the hosts with a 40-run knock off 35 balls. Abhishek Sharma was the only other batsman to pass the 20-run mark.
For England, despite a middle-order collapse that put them in a tough position, they managed to post a total of 171. Their bowlers then put in a solid collective effort to ensure India fell short of the target.
