Geneva is a beautiful destination to visit, not just for its stunning scenery and cultural offerings but also for its walkability.

While one of the most expensive places to visit in Europe, tourists who love to explore on foot are spoiled for choice in this Switzerland city.

What’s more, the city centre is just a six minute journey from the airport, making it the perfect destination for people doing short trips who don’t want to spend time in a long transfer.

According to geneva.info, Geneva airport is located four kilometers from the city. A train journey between the Geneva Airport and central railway station in the city (Gare Cornavin) takes six minutes, while a bus takes about 20 minutes. 

Tourists can take public transport around the city without spending a penny and can hop on and off its extensive transport network for free.

Anyone staying in approved accommodation, whether that be a hotel, youth hostel, or campsite, is entitled to the city’s Transport Card for free travel for the duration of their stay.

Walkable city

Geneva’s city centre is relatively small, meaning most of its top attractions are located within a short distance of each other.

Whether you’re staying near the lake or in the Old Town, many of the city’s highlights are accessible on foot.

You can wander from the famous Jet d’Eau, the large fountain, or to the charming Parc des Bastions, a famous park, without needing to hop on a bus or tram.

Geneva is also home to one of the largest lakes in Europe: Lake Geneva. This area is perfect for a leisurely walk or a more active outing, depending on your pace.

Geneva is full of parks that provide peaceful walking routes. Parc La Grange and Parc des Eaux-Vives are both located along the lake and are ideal for an afternoon walk.

Jardin Anglais is another favorite, located close to the city center and offering beautiful lakeside views.

If you’re up for more adventurous walks, Geneva’s location at the foot of the Alps offers easy access to hiking trails just outside the city.

Public transport

While Geneva is easily walkable, its public transport system is an added bonus for tired feet. The city offers trams, buses, and even water taxis (known as Mouettes) that can quickly get you to any corner of the city.

Plus, if you stay at a hotel in Geneva, you’re typically given a Geneva Transport Card for free public transport during your stay.

Geneva has embraced sustainability and eco-friendly practices, and part of this effort is encouraging walking and reducing car traffic. The city has several areas where car access is limited or prohibited.
