Beautiful country is the ‘cheapest place’ to live for British expats | Travel News | Travel
admin January 3, 2024 ArticleItaly has long been a favourite holiday destination for British tourists, thanks to its incredible food, beautiful cities and relaxed atmosphere.
Iconic cities such as Rome and Venice attract Brits in their thousands for quick getaways and city breaks, but thanks to the current cost of living in the UK, many visitors might be considering a more permanent stay.
Perhaps on the outside, Italy might seem like an expensive destination for British expats to consider moving to, with high-end fashion brands springing to mind.
But actually, the data points to the cost of living being far lower in Italy on average than in the UK.
According to LivingCost.org, the average cost of living in the UK (£1,580) is around 40 percent more expensive than in Italy (£1,099).
The average one-person rent in Italy is £543, whereas the average one-person rent in the UK is £961 – over £400 more expensive than its Mediterranean counterpart.
It is actually cheaper on average for a family to rent in Italy than it is for one person to rent in the UK, with the average family rent in Italy totalling £952.
In comparison, the average family rent in the UK is £1,692.
To determine the cheapest country to live in overseas, YourOverseasHome analysed the cost of living in seven European countries.
Those countries were: France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and the UK.
Their research confirmed that Italy was the cheapest country for expats to move to, making a fuller wallet a nice addition to the breathtaking scenery.
YourOverseasHome said: “Despite there being a few cities and towns that have reputations for being expensive destinations, Italy is by far the cheapest place to live long term when you’re not spending like a traveller.
“This is despite the fact that energy costs more in Italy!
“Of course, we acknowledge the fact that the true cost of living will vary significantly from region to region, but to live in a run-of-the-mill town or village outside the usual tourist hotspots, Italy is apparently the most reasonable.”
