The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will sack Rohit Sharma from Test captaincy. According to the Indian Express, the apex body of the Indian cricket has decided to appoint a new skipper for the tour of England. The decision-makers will back the decision of the national selection committee.
This move is not driven due to transition or to remove the aging cricketers. It is based on Rohit Sharma’s performance in Test cricket. It is learnt that Rohit will continue to be a part of the fifty-over format.
Earlier, it is was reported that the board wanted Rohit to lead the team for the upcoming five-Test against England. Rohit was also looking forward to leading the pace attack with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj in the squad. However, the selectors had a series of discussion over the 37-year-old’s Test future, before updating the BCCI about their decision.
“Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee wants a new leader for the series against England and Rohit is not in their plans. They want to groom a young captain and the selectors have informed the BCCI that Rohit won’t lead the team against the Ben Stokes-led unit,” a source in the Indian board informed this newspaper.
On May 6, Team India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir had said any decision regarding Rohit’s future in red-ball cricket would be taken by the five wise men of the Indian cricket.
