Former India player Sunil Gavaskar lauded Cricket Australia and Glenn McGrath for their charitable work to save lives from breast cancer in the country. The Sydney Test has been dedicated to the noble cause for a long time, and all the money from the game goes to the McGrath Foundation, an organization involved in treatment and awareness regarding the dreadful disease. It was started by legendary fast bowler Glenn McGrath after his wife passed away due to breast cancer. He is actively involved in his foundation and makes sure to invite big names for the cause.
Gavaskar urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to start a similar initiative from the next cycle of the home season. The apex body of Indian cricket is the richest in the world, and the legendary batter feels that the decision-makers can start an association with one of the foundations of the former Indian players.
“Glenn McGrath and Cricket Australia should be lauded for coming forward for a noble cause. McGrath Foundation in Australia, and we also have a day dedicated to charity in England under the wings of ECB. There is a Bob Willis Day in Birmingham, and Lord’s also manages a similar program,” he said.
“BCCI should learn from Australia and England and should dedicate a day of Test cricket to charity. They can tie up with one of the foundations of the former Indian players. People think that BCCI is only concerned about money, and this is because their good work is not famous among the general masses.
“They gave pensions to former players and started WPL for the women cricketers. They also make donations to various fields. However, the people in India are not aware of the steps taken by the BCCI. The new home season would be a perfect time to start a noble initiative,” he added.
