In a major boost for former India player MS Dhoni and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to reintroduce the old rule that allows the players to be part of uncapped category if they have been retired for more than five years.
The rule was in place since the first season of the tournament in 2008, but it was scrapped in 2021 as it was never used by the franchises. During a meeting of the franchise owners and the apex body of the Indian cricket, Chennai urged the BCCI to bring it back but the other franchises wer not interested.
“There is a possibility of the rule coming back. It was discussed during the meeting between the stakeholders and could be reintroduced when the new retention policies are announced,” a source was quoted as telling News18 Cricketnext.
According to the old policy, an uncapped player can be retained for INR 4 crore. By retaining MS Dhoni for INR 4 crore, CSK can focus on many of their star players.
Dhoni has played 264 matches in the Indian Premier League. He was retained for INR 12 crore ahead of the mega auction in 2022.
