The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a new rule in domestic cricket after Rishabh Pant was injured during the fourth Test against England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Teams would be allowed to seek a replacement for serious injuries. There have been calls to bring in a provision where a team can replace an injured player with a fit cricketer.
Pant’s toe was fractured on Day 1 of the red-ball game in Manchester, and he couldn’t participate in the remaining days. England all-rounder Chris Woakes suffered a nasty shoulder injury in the fifth Test and was ruled out of the game. The ICC didn’t come up with a solution despite appeals from former cricketers, but the Indian Cricket Board has introduced new laws to address the issue.
If a player suffers an external injury in the playing area and cannot continue playing, his team will be allowed to seek a like-for-like replacement by the match referee.
“If a player suffers a serious injury and is ruled out of the match, Serious Injury Replacement may be permitted in the following circumstances. The serious injury sustained during play and in the playing areas due to an external blow results in fracture, deep cut or dislocation,” says the new rule.
“The like-for-like replacement will be allowed,” the rule added. The rule is for senior and domestic tournaments. It will make its debut in the Duleep Trophy from August 28 and the Under-19 CK Nayudu Trophy.
