West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell is gearing up for the 2024 T20 World Cup with a humorous fitness pledge, vowing to resemble a UFC fighter. The charismatic cricketer expressed his commitment to achieving peak physical condition as his team prepares to host the tournament, slated to commence on June 4.
Russell highlighted the significance of the recent T20I series victory against England as a crucial step in their preparation for the upcoming World Cup. The West Indies secured a 3-2 triumph, with Russell playing a pivotal role in the team’s success. The Jamaican emerged as the highest wicket-taker for the hosts, claiming seven wickets in five games at an average of 28.13.
Speaking with TNT Sports, Russell expressed confidence in the West Indies’ ability to challenge other teams in the World Cup. He emphasized the positive impact of remaining active through continuous cricket.
“I’ll get fitter, honestly. I’ll resemble a UFC fighter. This win is significant. It motivates me to push my limits. We have plenty of cricket ahead, which is great. When you’re actively playing and competing, your body stays active. We won’t just be sitting at home waiting for the World Cup. We’ll surely challenge other teams and give them a tough competition in the World Cup,” he said.
One of the standout aspects of the series was Russell’s batting prowess. The 35-year-old maintained an impressive strike rate of 169.35, showcasing his ability to make impactful contributions with the bat.
