“A guy from Kerala has to do something special”: Sanju Samson opens up on competition for places in Team India
Sanju Samson hasn’t played a lot of cricket for the Indian team despite being supremely talented. He has been inconsistent with the bat. Samson has played some fine innings for the side over the years, but the lean patch has extended more. Samson plays white-ball cricket for India, and his last game was in the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan.
Samson likes to play aggressively, which has made him a dangerous batter in shorter formats. As the skipper of Rajasthan Royals, the Kerala wicket-keeper has impressed everyone. In the last season, he scored 362 runs at a strike rate of 153.39. In 2022, he accumulated 458 runs, leading his franchise to the final.
Samson admitted that he needs to evolve as a batter to remain competitive amidst the growing competition for places.
“When you are playing cricket for the world’s number one team, you need consistency. A big pool of players is eyeing to play for the Indian team. A guy from Kerala has to do something special to cement his place in the Indian team because of the number of players and competitions,” Samson told Star Sports on their show Star Nahi Far.
“I always wanted to outperform others by hitting a six on the first ball I faced. I wanted to do something different. Why do we have to wait for 10 balls before hitting a six. This thought process developed my power-hitting.”
Competition for the wicket-keeping slot
Ishan Kishan, Jitesh Sharma, Dhruv Jurel, Rishabh Pant, and Sanju Samson are the Indian wicket-keepers who can represent the country.
KL Rahul kept the wickets during the ICC World Cup 2023 and the two-match Test series against South Africa.
“I have been working hard for a long time and the results are positive. I want to do something spectacular for the side I play for. I am never satisfied,” Sanju Samson concluded.
