This Historic Fort in Mumbai, Overlooking the Arabian Sea, Boasts Breathtaking Views

While Rajasthan is renowned for its impressive forts and palaces, Mumbai also boasts a fort that stands as a magnificent testament to the city’s rich history. Bandra Fort, also known as Castella de Aguada, is a hidden gem offering breathtaking views and an intriguing past.

Constructed by the Portuguese for strategic security, Bandra Fort was strategically placed to monitor key locations: Mahim Bay to the south, the Arabian Sea to the west, Worli Island to the south, and Mahim city to the southwest. This vantage point ensured that any approaching enemy could be spotted from afar. In 1739, the Marathas seized control of the fort, which remained under their rule until 1774.

Bandra Fort is designed in European style, featuring a large gate, storage rooms, and communal areas. Standing 43-feet tall and situated 24 metres (79 feet) above sea level, the fort’s elevation was intended to safeguard it from floods.
