The New King of BMW Coupes Isn’t Even Built by BMW

The family behind the Alpina brand has yet to announce how much this special BMW-based model will cost

How do you make a car as brilliant as the BMW M4 even better? Well, Bovensiepen believes the way to do so is by giving it some extra power and radically overhauling its design thanks to a tight collaboration with Italian design house Zagato. Known simply as the Bovensiepen Zagato, the GT premiered at Villa d’Este in May and last weekend, made its dynamic debut during the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Although many enthusiasts are familiar with Zagato, Bovensiepen is a new name in the world of coachbuilding. That said, the family behind the company knows a thing or two about building cars. They’re the founders of Alpina, the legendary BMW coachbuilder, who launched this new venture after selling the brand to BMW in 2022. Fittingly, their first project is based on, well, what else – a BMW.

Some people like the design of the current M4, while many others hate it. With the exception of the massive kidney grilles, I think it looks quite nice. However, there’s no denying that the front end of Bovensiepen’s creation is much more refined, rocking distinctive headlights, more curves, and a classier grille.

Subtle Styling, Sharper Presence

While cruising up the Goodwood hillclimb, the front does look excellent. Similarly, the rear end looks great, particularly thanks to the new tailgate, quarter panels, and bumper. The facelifted M4’s taillights have been retained, but we’re not complaining, as they look sensational.

The soundtrack is a little disappointing. As standard, the M4’s 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six pumps out 480 hp and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque, but thanks to some modifications, Bovensiepen has been able to increase these figures to 611 hp and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm), well beyond even the M4 CSL with its 543 hp.

There’s also a titanium exhaust from Akrapovic. However, perhaps because the driver was keeping the car’s revs quite low and short-shifting, we don’t get a great chance to hear it.

No pricing details have been announced for the special Zagato model, nor do we know how many units will be produced. But, given its coachbuilt nature, the carbon fiber bodywork, tuned engine, and completely re-trimmed interior, it will obviously be expensive, priced well beyond an M4 Competition, or possibly, any other BMW, for that matter.
