The Cheapest SUVs And Trucks To Insure Aren’t Always The Ones You Expect

A new study reveals the vehicles with the lowest insurance costs in 2025, but leaves key details out

The monthly loan or lease cost plays a major role in dictating which vehicle we’re going to drive next, but most of us don’t give enough consideration into how much insurance cover can vary between seemingly similar models. Now one company has helped shine a little light on the subject by pulling together a list of the SUVs and trucks that costs the least to insure.

California-based Mercury Insurance lists 10 models in each category, and although there’s some overlap, its fair to say that the truck and SUV lists are dominated by different brands. What they do have in common is a total absence of EVs, which are often far more expensive to insure than combustion vehicles.

Topping the truck category is the Chevrolet Colorado LT, closely followed by the Silverado C3500. Next comes the Ford Maverick and Ranger, which are tied for third spot, Hyundai’s slow-selling Santa Cruz takes fourth and the Toyota Tundra CrewMax grabs fifth. The remaining five spots are occupied by the Ford F-150, Toyota Tacoma, Ford F-350 Super Duty, Dodge and Ram 1500 and GMC Canyon.

Least Expensive Trucks To Insure

Over on the SUV chart it’s Hyundai that takes the affordability lead with the Santa Fe. Honda’s Pilot has to make do with second, but this isn’t the last we’ll hear from the brand. The third-placed Blazer snags Chevy’s only spot on the SUV table, and the Sportage is the highest ranking of the company’s three utilities that made the top 10.

Fifth goes to to the Honda Passport, Ford’s dies-soon Escape is sixth, then it’s a scrap between Kia and Honda for the remaining four places. The Soul wins, securing seventh, and is followed by the HR-V, CR-V and Kia’s Sorento. One thing that stands out is the absence of Toyota, despite its status as one of the top-selling SUV brands.

A Study With Missing Pieces

This is the 10th year Mercury has published its study, which would be far more interesting and useful if it included some sample premiums for the average driver to provide some context about how much more affordable the top-rated vehicles are, along with some explanation of why they attract those lower premiums.
