The Cadillac Lyriq’s ABS System Could Cause Brake Failure
The manufacturer is not aware of any injuries or fatalities resulting from the fault

Cadillac’s best-selling EV, the eye-catching Lyriq, has been hit with a recall in the U.S., and while some recalls are for minor issues with little risk, this one is different.
Documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveal that certain 2023-2024 Lyriq AWD models may have been fitted with an overly sensitive ABS. GM says that during braking events on dry surfaces below 25 mph, the ABS could falsely activate and may continue to release braking pressure.

What does this mean in layman’s terms? Well, a release of braking pressure could reduce the performance of the brakes or prevent them from working altogether. That poses a serious safety risk and increases the chance of a crash, GM says. The issue is caused by a software defect in the electronic brake control module.
In total, 21,469 Cadillac Lyriqs delivered for the 2023-2024 model years and assembled between December 14, 2022, and August 5, 2024, are impacted.
GM started to investigate a potential issue on May 31, 2024, after receiving two reports of incidents caused by an alleged loss of braking, likely because of a software issue with the ABS. While the company is not aware of any other incidents, nor any injuries or fatalities resulting from the fault, it decided to issue a safety recall on August 1.
Dealers were notified of the recall on August 8, while owners will be informed from September 23. Those who have enabled over-the-air updates in their Lyriqs will receive new software to resolve the fault, while other owners are free to schedule an appointment at a local GM dealer for the new software to be installed.
Demand for the Lyriq has been strong this year. Sales of the EV are up 465% year over year and jumped 441% in June compared to the same month in 2023. In the second quarter of this year, Cadillac sold 7,294 Lyriqs, making it the brand’s second best-selling model, only behind the Escalade with 10,069 units.
