Opel Frontera To Return As An Electric SUV This Year

Opel has announced the Frontera nameplate will make a return on an all-new SUV model that will be presented later this year and sold as a battery-electric vehicle.

The European carmaker first used the Frontera nameplate from 1991-1998 for an SUV based on the Isuzu Wizard. After production of the first-gen model ended, Opel started manufacturing the second-gen model, known as the Frontera B. It was axed in 2004 and the third-generation model is shaping up to be very different than its predecessors and will serve as a replacement for the outgoing Crossland.

Just two teaser images of the new model have been released, meaning most of its design has been hidden. Opel says it will “display a new rugged interpretation of Opel’s bold and pure design philosophy” and will also be the brand’s first model to use its new ‘Blitz’ emblem. A teaser showing the side profile of the Frontera indicates that it will be quite large with a relatively flat roof and expansive side windows. Visible at the rear is a spoiler stretching out from the roof.

The second teaser previews the front end of the new model but beyond showcasing the updated grille, it doesn’t show much else other than the corner of one of the LED headlights.

Opel says the new Frontera “will come with a high level of space and versatility and thus appeal to customers with an active lifestyle and families alike.”

“The name ‘Frontera’ is ideally suited to our new exciting SUV model,” added Opel chief executive Florian Huettl. “It will have a confident character and be positioned right in the core of the market.”

The company will release the first images and additional details about the new Frontera in the coming weeks. It will launch this year alongside an electric version of the next-generation Opel Grandland.
