Nissan’s Tiny Kei Car Hides A Big Surprise Inside Its Boxy Little Body

Nissan has revamped its Roox Kei car for a fourth generation, bringing an updated design and a slew of new features. While the Roox is only sold in Japan, it’s bound to make some foreign Kei car enthusiasts yearn to own one thanks to the cute and boxy design.

Like many other Kei cars, the new Roox has been designed to offer as much room as possible, while complying with local regulations for these pint-sized cars. Although it retains a similar overall shape to the old model, Nissan has completely overhauled the Roox’s front end with new headlights and a wraparound LED light bar.

A similar story plays out along the sides. The sheet metal is all new, yet the Roox still relies on sliding rear doors, a practical feature that has carried over from the previous model.
Bigger Inside, Smarter Layout
Nissan has stretched the cabin by 4.5 inches (115 mm), ensuring that it’s large enough to accommodate four adults. The rear seats that can slide up to 12.5 inches (320 mm) improve practicality, while the cargo area is now able to hold up to four 48-liter suitcases. Moreover, this is the most tech-forward Roox ever.
The cabin sports a large 12.3-inch infotainment display, the largest screen ever fitted to a Kei car from any manufacturer. Additionally, there is an Intelligent Around View Monitor with an Invisible Hood View that provides the driver with a virtual image through the engine bay, which makes detecting hazards easier than ever.
Packed With Safety Tech
The Roox also comes standard with a 3D view system and is equipped with the Nissan ProPILOT system, Intelligent Emergency Braking, Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention, Intelligent Blind Spot Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Buyers will have no shortage of personalization options either, with 17 paint finishes available, including six two-tone and seven solid choices across both the Standard trim and the sportier Highway STAR.
Prices for the refreshed Roox will start at 1.6 million yen ($10,760). While detailed technical specifications will be announced soon, it will likely retain the same 658 cc engine that’s capable of producing 52 hp and 44 lb-ft (60 Nm) of torque.
