- A motorcyclist cheated death after crashing during a police chase south of LA.
- The rider clipped a car at 130 mph and fell off, skidding along the 405 freeway.
- Despite the speed of the smash the rider was later seen running down the road.
Protective motorcycle gear can be a pain to put on and wear, but it literally saved the skin of one rider who was filmed crashing in spectacular style during a high-speed police chase in Southern California.
California Highway Patrol officers initially tried to stop the motorcyclist near Downey, around 13 miles (21 km) southeast of Los Angeles on the 605 Freeway on Sunday night. He was wanted for speeding and made a break for it, which is where the pace really cranked up, ABC7’s Eyewitness News reports.

With the cops hot on his tail the rider switched to the 405 Freeway, reaching speed of over 140 mph (225 kmh), and by this point ABC7’s news helicopter was tracking the action from the sky. Footage shows the bike tearing past other traffic, moving around twice as fast on the dimly-lit freeway.
Sudden Impact at Triple-Digit Speeds
Whether it was the lack of visibility, simply a case of too much speed or a much slower vehicle ahead changing lanes unexpectedly, we don’t know, but the rider then clips a car at around 130 mph (210 km/h), sending sparks flying and both him and his motorcycle skidding along the freeway.
It’s the kind of crash that you’d put money on killing the rider, either from the initial impact, or from him colliding with another car or a barrier on his butt. Or being run over by one of the following vehicles. But not only does he survive, but he’s then seen running along the multi-lane road under the glare of the ABC7 helicopter spotlight until ground cops catch up with him.
Rider Escapes Serious Injury, Faces Serious Charges
CHP hasn’t released the name of the captured rider, but he is likely facing some charges that are far more serious than the speeding rap he originally ran to avoid. And even though his protective gear saved his life, you can bet he woke up feeling stiffer than a concrete slab the morning after.
