The owner of a home northwest of Shanghai, China, will soon have to endure 24/7 road noise after a major new highway was built around his home in Jinxi. Images and videos currently doing the rounds on social media look like some sick, twisted scene out of a dystopian film, but the stubborn owner’s situation is very real.

In China, a property like this is known as a ‘nail house’, remaining in position after the owner rejected a buyout offer from the Chinese government for a construction project.
It’s understood that grandfather, Huang Ping, was offered approximately 1.6 million yuan, or roughly $222,000, and three replacement properties to relocate. He refused, reportedly in the hope that a better offer would come.

However, there was no better offer, and the local government decided to start building the new highway anyway. The man’s home now sits right in the center of the highway, which briefly splits in two and rounds alongside his home.
The noise of the construction is reportedly so bad that Ping, who lives with his 11-year-old grandson, usually spends most of their time in the town center, only returning home at night when construction has ended.

Regret Αfter Ηolding Οut
According to the homeowner, he now regrets his decision not to accept the government’s buyout offer.
“If I could turn back time, I would agree to the demolition conditions they offered,” he told Metro. “Now it feels like I lost a big bet. I regret it a bit.”
The only way the grandfather can now reach his home is to walk through a large pipe that runs under the highway. While the property is accessible when it’s dry, some have raised concerns about the potential for the property to flood during rainstorms.
