Celebrity stylist, Eka Lakhani decodes the tailored styles Karan Johar wore at the 78th Cannes Film Festival.

The King of Cannes or should we say Kannnes, Karan Johar owned the mecca of cinema red carpet, the 78th Cannes Film Festival for two reasons – one because Homebound was selected in the Un Certain Regard category and two, his Cannes fashion moments were one of the best moodboards envisioned for menswear this year.
From the salmon pink Crestelli suit, Manish Malhotra’s Indian royalty meets Bridgerton couture look to Rohit Bal’s quiet luxury jacket to Helen Anthony’s canvassed suit, Karan Johar’s style quotient was a perfect blend of Indian and western craftsmanship. Costume designer and celebrity stylist Eka Lakhani and filmmaker Karan Johar together created history in Cannes on and off the red carpet.

Look 1: Crestelli Salmon Pink Suit
Karan Johar’s first look in Cannes featured a label Crestelli suit crafted from a luxurious wool-silk blend. The ensemble captured a burst of energy and optimism, while still keeping Karan’s style quotient elevated and refined. To complement the tailored suit, Eka Lakhani chose the colour salmon pink for its fresh, vibrant tone. “It complemented the spirit of Cannes beautifully,” adds Eka.
Look 2: Valentino Kimono-Style Jacket
What drew Eka to this Valentino kimono-style jacket was the Indian-inspired motifs that added a subtle nod to Cannes. The jacket was worn open and the belt was smartly styled as a scarf. According to Eka, the idea came from Karan himself. The look was paired with navy blue trousers and a cross-lapel shirt.
Look 3: Manish Malhotra Couture
For this first red carpet appearance, Karan Johar wore a custom Manish Malhotra ensemble featuring a cropped sherwani in zardozi threadwork, brocade collar, and frilled cuffs, layered over a Renaissance inspired shirt. “Manish shared this stunning design with us, and Karan instantly loved the statement button brooches. What elevated it further was Karan’s own twist, opting for a ruffled shirt instead of the usual,” says Eka Lakhani. The embroidery on the bandhgala took 1200 hours and 12 master karigars to complete. For Eka, this look was ‘Indian royalty meets Bridgerton’. Truly iconic!
Look 4: Falguni Shane Peacock Black and White Suit
A night in Croisette was celebrated in a classic Falguni Shane Peacock black and white suit but with a twist. The sharp white panels break the black jacket in an interesting way. Thus making this look graphic, playful and fun. Eka finished the look with a gold Schiaparelli brooch, which brought a bold contrast to the art deco-inspired silhouette.
Look 5: Rohit Bal Silk Velvet Jacket With Roses
‘Blooming at Cannes’ was how Karan Johar described the exquisite Rohit Bal rich silk velvet jacket featuring myriad embroidered rose motifs in shades of soft pink and red. Completed over 410 hours with silk threads and metallic sequins, the handcrafted blooms are a statement in quiet luxury.
Look 6: Helen Anthony Suit
Handmade in Savile Row London, Karan Johar’s Helen Anthony full canvassed suit took up to 100 hours to create. “This exquisite suit by Helen Anthony is a true statement of British luxury and artisanal excellence. Crafted from premium British velvet in collaboration with the world-renowned fabric mill Scabal, the piece represents true British heritage and craftsmanship,” adds Eka Lakhani.
