How Do Biometric Systems Enhance Information Technology Security?
admin January 20, 2025 ArticleBiometric Systems Enhance Information Technology Security
Biometric systems enhance information technology security by reducing the risk of unauthorized access to sensitive data. The unique characteristics of a person such as fingerprints, iris patterns or facial features are difficult to replicate or forge, making it unlikely that an unauthorized user will be able to gain unauthorized access to sensitive data (Alice Biometrics). Additionally, implementing biometric authentication systems reduces the need for users to manage multiple passwords and PINs for different accounts, providing increased convenience and helping to reduce the likelihood of forgotten, stolen or compromised password-related issues.
However, it is important to remember that no biometric system is foolproof. Depending on how the data is collected and stored, certain biometrics may be subject to attacks such as forgery or spoofing (the production of fake artefacts such as silicone fingerprint replicas or photographs that can be used to trick sensors). Additionally, some biometrics reveal secondary information technology security about the person beyond what they are being collected for, which could challenge the notion of consent within the context of a transactional model of privacy.
Furthermore, some biometrics such as iris patterns and facial features are not always captured or recorded clearly enough to be reliably recognised at enrolment and recognition phases. Other factors such as environmental conditions, the quality of computing hardware and the sensitivity of a sensor can also impact a biometric system’s ability to identify a person. Biometric systems can also produce false positives (incorrectly authenticating an unauthorized individual) and false negatives (failing to authenticate an authorized person).

How Do Biometric Systems Enhance Information Technology Security?
Because a person’s biometrics are unique to them, it is very difficult for anyone else to obtain these characteristics or use them to impersonate that person. For this reason, biometrics can be considered the gold standard for identity verification. However, as a result of the uniqueness of biometrics, they are usually expensive to deploy and maintain compared to other forms of identification such as a passport or driving licence.
In addition, because they are based on physical traits, a person’s biometrics can change over time, for example due to illness or injury. This can complicate the deployment and operation of a biometric system, as the enrolled biometrics may need to be repeatedly re-scanned to establish a valid connection with the software.
Biometric data is a critical asset for any business, but it is vital that adequate cybersecurity measures are implemented and that staff trained on how to handle, secure and store this type of information technology security. This includes implementing strong encryption, regular security audits and ensuring that all employees who are responsible for handling, processing or storing biometric data receive adequate cybersecurity training. It is also essential that companies remain vigilant regarding regulatory compliance, as the laws governing this type of data can differ across jurisdictions.
Insider threats can be particularly difficult to detect because the individuals involved already have legitimate access to the network. They may exploit this trust to conduct malicious activities without triggering typical security alerts. Insider threats can be either malicious (intentional) or accidental (due to negligence or mistakes).
