Dacia Teases New Model, Could It Be An Updated Spring EV?

The affordable EV could be up for some serious updates, likely not limited to a redesigned exterior

The Dacia Spring, the most affordable electric car in the European market, is facing strong competition from the new Citroen e-C3 and many other upcoming urban EVs like the Fiat Panda. To keep it relevant and desirable, Dacia is reportedly working on a comprehensive update, as hinted at by an official teaser.

The shadowy photo was published on social media by Dacia France, with the description “It’s coming soon… stay tuned!”. While the teaser didn’t give away the name of the model, the proportions make us believe that this is a new version of the Dacia Spring, rather than the slightly larger Sandero. Note that the Spring recently received a massive discount in Germany, which in combination with the subsidies lowered its entry price to as little as €12,750 ($13,740).

A visual comparison with the existing model reveals that both the front and rear ends have been redesigned. The outline of the headlights is reminiscent of the new Dacia Duster, while the angular treatment of the tail looks more like the Sandero Stepway. The ground clearance appears to be more generous than before, and the wheels look larger, improving the crossover stance of the EV despite the lack of roof rails. We wouldn’t be surprised if the new model had an overhauled interior, taking inspiration from the new Duster.

The Dacia Spring was originally introduced in 2020 and received a mild visual makeover in 2022 when it adopted a revised grille with the new Dacia emblem. In 2023, the automaker unveiled the flagship Extreme trim with more features and an increased power output. Today, the Spring is available with a single electric motor producing 44 hp (33 kW / 45 PS), or 64 hp (48 kW / 65 PS), and a 26.8 kWh battery pack allowing a WLTP range of 220-225 km (137-140 miles).

Chances are that the 2024 update will be deeper than a simple facelift, as EV buyers have gotten more demanding, even in the lowest price bracket. In that context, Dacia might improve the specs of the Spring, bringing it closer to newer rivals.

The teaser didn’t give us a date for the debut of the new model, but Autocar India reports it could happen as soon as February 21. The updates that will be introduced by the new Dacia Spring are expected to be adopted by the Renault Kwid twin which is available in other emerging markets.
