For example, LAM (Laser Activation Metallization) and DPC (Direct Patterning Ceramic) are two popular processes. LAM utilizes a high-energy laser to ionize the ceramic and metal substrate, causing them to grow together. This creates a deep link that increases the bond strength and reduces surface roughness. It’s more expensive than the DPC method, but it provides greater reliability and better electrical isolation.

Another type of ceramic PCB is thick film. Thick-film ceramics are used when oxidation is a concern. This type is baked at a lower temperature, which matches the sintering of gold or silver pastes. This eliminates the need for a copper clad layer, which is more likely to oxidize. Moreover, it’s more resistant to corrosion, and its copper-free structure improves heat transfer and efficiency.
For applications requiring high-speed signals, a conductive epoxy paste can be added to the top of the thick-film ceramic. This allows for fast, reliable connections between layers and to the components. The conductive epoxy can also protect the copper from thermal stresses and vibrations, improving the board’s durability.
