The world’s biggest cruise ships often have more than 15 decks so passengers have a lot of choice when it comes to selecting their cabin.

But if they want a good night’s sleep, they might want to carefully consider their choice, according to a sleep expert.

Rebecca Swain, sleep and mattress expert at Winstons Beds, said: “The biggest thing when choosing your room is the right location.”

Guests can usually access deck plans on their cruise line’s website, so it’s worth checking where cabins are located before making a choice.

But what’s the biggest cabin mistake?

“Take note of what’s above and below your room,” warned Rebecca. People who are light sleepers will want to make sure they’re away from noisy areas.

Rooms by the ship’s lifts could have a lot of foot traffic while cabins under the pool deck are usually very noisy in the morning.

Rebecca added: “Try to stay clear of any bars or places that may be a bit rowdier at night!”

Opt for the lower deck

Guests might be tempted to book a room on one of the top decks for the best views. However, Rebecca said this might not be the best choice for those who suffer from motion sickness.

She said: “The lower deck is believed to be the best for those with motion sickness, in particular rooms in the middle.”

Rooms at the front and back of the ship are also thought to be more susceptible to the vessel’s movement.

Bring a sleep mask and ear plugs

Rebecca warned: “It’s worth packing a sleep mask and ear plugs just in case you can’t block out all the light and noise at night time.

“Earplugs will also block out the noise of the sea which can make some people feel uneasy.”

Earplugs will easily fit inside luggage and could help restless passengers to get a good night’s sleep.
