This pretty town been named the “cheapest coastal town in Britain” according to The Times, which has reported that the average price for a home in the area is only £117,895.
It is also the perfect spot to escape the massive crowds in the summer, as despite its surrounding natural beauty it has become a hidden gem in the North East.
Angie Main, the owner of the local microbrewery the Ink Spot has said the scenery is “fantastic” but the town “still feels like a village” due to how quiet and friendly it is.
She said: “It’s quiet, there is space and solitude. But everyone pulls together. It’s a proper community, it’s not yet gentrified, and it is very welcoming to new people.”

Visitors to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea have also commented on the town’s tranquil atmosphere and being quiet even in the height of summer.
On Trip Advisor, the most popular review said: “The beaches are lovely and clean, surfers were out for the spring tide, weather lovely. The little shops, cafes, lifeboat station, and maritime museum are all worth a visit….Not a lively seaside [town] but that’s the way we like it.”
Another person commented: “Visited for an evening walk on our way to our holiday cottage. A lovely peaceful place. There were hardly any other people around.”
Someone else wrote: “Lovely beach, great for rock pooling at low tide. Dog-friendly on the south beach….quiet, even in August.”
Despite its sleepy reputation, there is plenty to do and explore in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea as its seaside is famous for its wild dolphin sightings but you can even spot whales, seals, porpoises, and otters according to the Newbiggin by the Sea Dolphin Watch Association.
One of the best places to spot the local wildlife is Church Point, which offers incredible coastline views and also holds the town’s iconic sculpture ‘The Couple’ by artist Sean Henry, which shows a man and woman staring off into the ocean.

Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is known for its beautiful artworks, and one fun walk to take in the sights is the Newbiggin Art Trail, where you can download a free map on your phone that explains the background of over 50 art pieces scattered throughout the town.
Art lovers should also visit Newbiggin Arts Centre which not only features local artwork but hosts workshops for all ages to learn something new and even sells a small selection of art supplies.
There is also The Maritime Centre, the museum which only costs £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for children and has exhibitions exploring the town’s history, many activities for children and also offers breathtaking views of the coast from its cafe, where you enjoy a quick lunch or some tasty treats.
However, no visit to the seaside is complete without some delicious fish and chips, and in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea the best place to go eat is The Front, which has won an award for being the best chippy in Northumberland in 2023.
Anyone wishing to cool off with ice cream should also make a note to visit Caffè Bertorelli, an art deco Italian icecream parlor that sells homemade ice cream prepared freshly every day in a variety of flavors as well as selling tasty beverages and a wide selection of sweets.
No matter what you choose to do in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, it is the perfect place for a day out, a holiday, or even for anyone considering moving nearer to the sea as this picturesque town has plenty to offer due to its welcoming yet quiet atmosphere.
