After Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah criticizes Impact Player rule in IPL
Jasprit Bumrah, who won the second Player of the Match award in the Indian Premier League 2024, spoke against the Impact Player rule. Bumrah took three wickets in Mumbai Indians’ 9-run win over Punjab Kings. However, despite dismissing the top order of Punjab, Mumbai failed to close the game till the last over of the game.
Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh played sensational knocks for the hosts while chasing 193. Ashutosh struck 61 off 28, including 7 sixes and 2 fours. Shashank accumulated 41 runs off 25, laced with 3 sixes and 2 fours.
However, their dismissals allowed MI to clinch victory as PBKS were bowled out for 183 in 19.1 overs. Shashank’s wicket went to Bumrah, while Gerald Coetzee dismissed Ashutosh.
“It is good to win a match but we would have liked to close it a bit earlier. But this is what happens with Impact Player rule. It gives the license to the batters to go after the bowlers. A bowler becomes half of what he actually is because of this rule,” Jasprit Bumrah said at the post match presentation ceremony.
Earlier, his India and MI teammate, Rohit Sharma, had spoke against the Impact Player rule. In his conversation with Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Rohit said that this rule is impacting the Indian cricket.
“It is not good for the all-rounders.. Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube haven’t bowled this season. This is a concerning aspect. You play international cricket with 11 players but you are competing with 12 players in IPL. This rule was introduced to entertain the fans. I am not in favour of the Impact Player rule,” Rohit Sharma said.
