A gorgeous little beach in the UK which may not be on tourists’ radar has food, views and rockpooling to offer visitors.

Porthcurnick Beach in Cornwall’s Roseland Peninsular is just a mile north of the attractive fishing village, Portscatho, with its whitewashed cottages, harbour and 13th-century church, which makes for a relaxing stay while enjoying the peaceful beach.

The beach is the site of a pre-historic submerged forest and is home to fossilised roots, stumps and acorns, with archaeologists discovering iron-age pottery dating from around 2nd century BC at the site.

At low tide there is even more to explore, with rock pools appearing and small adjacent beaches becoming accessible nearby.

And for those who get hungry during their time at the beach, there is even the Hidden Hut, which offers locally sourced lunches and snacks between March and October.

It even hosts feast nights throughout the summer where visitors can bring their own cutlery and wine to enjoy a bohemian atmosphere.

While nearby Portscatho is a small village it has plenty to offer holidaymakers including independent shops such as a butchers, grocers and off-licence as well as galleries and gift shops. 

Those looking for a well-earned pint after a day of exploring can visit the Plume of Feathers pub which serves local St Austell Ales and highly-rated food.

Tourists looking to see some history can visit a unique memorial plinth dedicated to the 26,380 soldiers who lost their lives in the Burma War but who have no known resting place.

The town is also close to St Anthony Head, which stands on the top of the lighthouse used in the TV series Fraggle Rock.

Close to the landmark are more calm beaches such as Porth and Bohortha, which make for a perfect summer walk.

Those wishing to visit Portscatho and Porthcurnick Beach for themselves should book into the village’s Driftwood Hotel, which has its own Michelin-starred restaurant.

Rooms cost about £205 per night, with a train from London Paddington to nearby Truro costing about £80.
