BCCI sanctions Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill

New Delhi: Things have gone from bad to worse for Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill as the 24-year-old has been fined 12 lakh rupees by the IPL Governing Council for slow-over rate, after losing to Chennai Super Kings by 63 runs on Tuesday. Gill has been fined Rs 12 lakhs for his slow-over rate and has become the first captain to be fined for this in IPL 2024.

“Shubman Gill, the Gujarat Titans captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on March 26. As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Gill was fined ₹12 lakh,” IPL said in an official statement.

When Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won the toss and chose to bat first, they dominated the game thanks to the impressive performance of Rachin Ravindra. The left-handed batsman had made a strong debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by playing aggressively against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and he continued to impress in this match with an explosive innings of 46 runs off just 20 balls, which set the tone for CSK’s batting.

Early on in the match, Ruturaj Gaikwad had some good fortune when he was dropped at first slip during the first over. With Gaikwad holding his end, Ravindra Jadeja unleashed a series of impressive shots, much to the delight of the Chennai crowd. By the time Jadeja was dismissed, Chennai Super Kings had already raced to 62 runs within the first six overs.

After Ravindra’s dismissal, Gaikwad kept up the momentum, maintaining a scoring rate of over 10 an over. R Sai Kishore had a decent start to his spell, and his reward came in the form of Ajinkya Rahane’s wicket in the 11th over. A couple of overs later, Spencer Johnson induced an edge off Gaikwad’s bat. At 127 for three in the 12th over, Shivam Dube walked in.

After GT lost their set batters, Dube came in and smashed the first two balls he faced off R Sai Kishore for sixes, setting the tone for the rest of the match. Eventually with the win, CSK went on top of the table.
