The IPL 2024 is around the corner with season opener played between CSK and RCB. In every IPL new season, fresh opportunities await – including for the new Lucknow Super Giants franchise. In their brief two-year IPL history, the Super Giants have twice fallen in the Eliminator.
Ahead of this year’s IPL, newly appointed Lucknow head coach and former Australian batsman Justin Langer outlined plans to guide captain KL Rahul and the franchise to greater success.
Langer spoke to Ricky Ponting this morning and was astounded by the wealth of young talent in India. Ponting expressed great confidence that current Indian Head Coach Rahul Dravid was relishing the opportunity to guide such a gifted squad, saying,
“Rahul is one of the finest people I’ve known in cricket. He must be thrilled to coach the Indian team brimming with so much talent.”
Langer enjoyed great success as head coach of the Australian National Team during his previous stint. He took over the team amid turmoil after the Sandpaper scandal and led them to retain the Ashes and win the 2021 T20 World Cup.
Rahul Dravid has been the head coach of the Indian cricket team for nearly two and a half years. During his tenure, the team has struggled in crucial matches like the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final, the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinals, and the 2023 World Test Championship final. Dravid’s position has faced scrutiny in the past, with rumors that India could look beyond its domestic coaching pool and potentially hire someone like Justin Langer. Dravid’s contract expires after the 2024 T20 World Cup; if India falters in that tournament, it could put his future as head coach in jeopardy.
Langer also coached the Perth Scorchers to three Big Bash League titles. He will aim to replicate that success with the Lucknow Super Giants as they open their 2024 IPL campaign in an afternoon clash against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
