Finland isn’t usually at the top of the holiday wishlist for British tourists. But the country has so much more to offer than Lapland.

Spring or summer is the perfect time to explore the country’s spectacular coastline on a road trip. As Europe’s most forested country, it’s the ideal destination for nature-lovers.

Visit Finland recommends a four day road trip along Finland’s west coast which hits beaches, towns and islands.

The team said: “Finland’s west coast is a captivating region renowned for its picturesque archipelago, rich maritime heritage, charming wooden towns, and a thriving culture of coastal traditions, making it a delightful destination for exploration and relaxation.”

Road trippers are recommended to start their journey in Pori, a city on Finland’s pretty west coast.

From Pori, head to Yyteri, one of Finland’s most breathtaking beaches. Stretching across six kilometres, the beach has beautiful golden sand.

After a beach break, travel to the pretty village of Ahlainen to see its charming wooden houses.

On day two, travel to Kristiinankaupunki and the Bothnian Sea National Park. Wander the cobblestone streets before moving on to Vaasa.

On the third day of the trip, the route will let holidaymakers tick off some of Finland’s must-see beaches at Kalajoki.

With 15km of golden sand, Kalajoki has shallow water which is perfect for paddling if the weather’s warm enough.

For the last day of driving, head to Oulu which has a traditional market square and an interesting open-air museum.
