A beautiful beach on the south coast of England has been named the UK’s best hidden gem.

Man O’War beach on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast topped a list of the country’s best hidden beaches with list compilers describing it as “a scenic spot for you to hide away from the crowds”.

The beach finished ahead of the likes of Porth Joke in Cornwall, Botany Bay in Kent and Barricane Beach in Devon, in the table from Sykes Holiday Cottages.

The company said: “This quiet beach is the ideal respite from the usual crowds that you find at pretty UK beaches.

“Because of its steep downhill access and plenty of neighbouring beaches with easier entry, it is easy to see why this is one of the less-crowded beaches on the Dorset coast.

“The striking views are sure to spur you on and once you have arrived at this hidden beach, you will feel as if you had reached your own private island.”

They added: “Enjoy an afternoon lazing on the isolated beach with pebbles and fine sands, as you admire the views of the iconic Durdle Door arch.”

Dog owners will be pleased to know their four-legged friends are welcome on the beach, while there is also parking half a mile away.

One reviewer on Tripadvisor said the beach was “spectacular” but added that it took a “challenging walk” to get to.

The review read: “Beautiful views of Lulworth Cove and the coastline, but the forest walk is steep and you need to be fitter than I am as it looks a long way up but it is worth it.

“Also, the military have some land there and that in itself is quite exciting, but at weekends they are not firing their guns.”

The beach is close to the village of West Lulworth, which is home to one of the county’s oldest pubs in the 16th century Castle Inn, along with the Holy Trinity church which was built in 1869.
