This pretty island is one that often gets forgotten and overlooked – yet visitors say it’s a ‘quirky and cool’ place to visit. Located on the south coast of Essex, Canvey Island is a unique seaside destination.

It blends traditional British charm with rich local history and stunning natural beauty making it a great place to visit if you’re looking to explore somewhere a bit different.

Surrounded by the Thames Estuary, the island offers beautiful coastal walks, panoramic views, and a peaceful atmosphere perfect for a relaxing getaway. 

One person who visited the island on Tripadvisor said: “So nifty I love this place its so quirky and cool the locals are lovely (especially the youth) the complaints people have are unwarranted and although some of the buildings are dated I believe this show’s character high crime rate is surely a myth I will be returning.”

The Canvey seafront is a family favourite, with sandy beaches, a lively amusement arcade and a range of classic fish and chip shops lining its promenade.

If you’re a history lover, you can also visit the Canvey Island Heritage Centre or the Dutch Cottage Museum.

One person who visited the beach on Tripadvisor said: “Thorney Bay Beach is so clean and tidy the Bay Watch team do a fantastic job.

“Nearby is a cafe and down road walking distance are arcades and children’s areas. This is a lovely place to visit throughout the year, not just in summer time.”

To get to the island, it’s easily accessible from London making it an ideal place for a day trip or a short break.
