A Devon town with its own castle and an abundance of independent shops is a treasure trove for visitors.

Art galleries, antiques and amazing gift shops are thriving in the high street of Totnes – and the pretty little town is surrounded by scenic countryside.

If you’re looking for an escape from the busy seaside areas in Devon or fancy a bit of unique shopping then a visit to Totnes is a good plan.

There’s a market most days in the centre of the high street of this colourful place which is full of good vibes.

This place is renowned for its independent businesses – and you can be sure to find unusual items in the shops that are a far cry from the average British high street.

This southwest UK town is renowned for its bohemian vibe, creative folk and spiritual feeling – it’s placed on a ley line, invisible historic mystical connections which are believed to link up significant sites across Britain.

This means hippies and spiritual thinkers have been drawn to the town since the 1960s and 70s, with the mystical reputation continuing to this day – and the locals even kicked out Costa Coffee.

One visitor described the town online: “The high street throbs with trails of diverse colourful locals and tourists commingling.

“People are so friendly that everyone calls you love or darling, there’s something down to earth and authentic about Totnes that makes you want to go back again to return to the trail.”

Visitors can also check out Totnes Castle – well preserved ancient Norman motte and bailey castle where you’ll find an old tower that dates back to the 12th century.

One shop in the town, the Magical Earth Emporium is renowned for its crystals and ‘witchy’ items, but you’ll also find proper Devon bakeries – and of course an abundance of traditional pasties.

There’s several pubs dotted about the town too along with plenty of cafes or restaurants where you can grab a Devon cream tea if you fancy it.

It’s easy to head out to the countryside too, with river walks with the nearby Dartington Estate where wildlife and stunning views are abundant.
