Steve Smith reflects on England’s evolving “Bazball” strategy with focus on results

Steve Smith, the former Australian captain, has expressed his view that England has adjusted their renowned “Bazball” strategy during the current Test series in India. In an interview with the BBC, Smith noted that the English team seems to be prioritizing results more than simply focusing on entertaining the audience, marking a shift in their approach.

“In the past few weeks, they’ve shifted their approach, focusing more on playing according to the situation, rather than just trying to entertain like they initially set out to do,” Smith said.

“Now, they’re genuinely focused on winning games, which seems different from what they had previously stated,” he added.

Under Brendon McCullum, England’s aggressive “Bazball” style has reinvigorated their home Test cricket but raised doubts about its sustainability against top teams in challenging conditions. While England’s home form has been strong, their overseas performances, especially in the subcontinent, have been inconsistent.

Since the World Test Championship (WTC) began, England have yet to reach a final, unlike New Zealand (2021), Australia (2023), and India, who have shown consistency. However, England’s current WTC form offers hope, with a potential series win over India serving as a stepping stone for the upcoming Ashes. England haven’t held the Ashes since 2015, and McCullum’s side is eager to change that.

Smith’s comments reflect a growing belief that England may be striking the right balance between fearless play and tactical awareness, potentially helping them in the WTC and beyond.
