BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Captain Shubman Gill was 265 not out at tea as he and Washington Sundar led India closer to 600 runs against England on day two Thursday of the second test at Edgbaston.
India was 564-7 and showing no urgency to declare, not after England chased down 371 in the fourth innings in Leeds last week to win the first test.
No. 8 batter Sundar, who came into the test with a better batting average than Gill — 42 to 36 — solidly supported his skipper, who was setting team and personal milestones.
They came together just before lunch when Ravindra Jadeja edged behind on 89, and combined for 144 runs at a relatively cracking 4.6 an over.
England resorted to trying part-time bowlers Joe Root and Harry Brook to break them up and Root’s off-spin cleaned out Sundar’s middle stump on 42 off 103 balls just minutes before tea.
Gill upped his tempo in the afternoon, moving his personal-best test score from 168 at lunch to 265.
On the way were records galore.
On 180, he had the highest score by an India captain in England, eclipsing Mohammad Azharuddin’s 179 in 1990 at Old Trafford.

By tea, he’d faced 380 balls, hit 30 boundaries and three sixes.
