The Indian men’s cricket team was instructed to remain in their hotel for several hours while local police looked into a suspicious unattended package in the vicinity. The team had returned after a practice session ahead of the second Test match at Edgbaston when they were instructed not to leave the premises. Reports of the parcel prompted the police to carry out an investigation, which led to the temporary lockdown.
“Everything is fine,” a team spokesperson told IANS in response to an inquiry.
Social media posts suggested that the Indian cricket team was instructed by local police authorities to stay inside their hotel rooms.
“The Indian team in Birmingham has been instructed to stay indoors after police cordoned off the Centenary Square area following reports of a suspicious package in the area,” said a post on X.
Reports from local media indicated that West Midlands Police confirmed a safety cordon was established around Centenary Square following the discovery of an unattended package. The situation was resolved after approximately an hour, with the area being cleared and no threats confirmed following the investigation.
The Indian cricket team is now focused on gearing up for the second Test of the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series at Edgbaston. The team travelled to Birmingham after playing the first Test at Headingley in Leeds.
England, led by Ben Stokes, are ahead 1-0 in the series, following their five-wicket win in the first Test at Leeds, where they completed a remarkable chase of 371 runs on the final day. India, despite registering five centuries, lost the match due to their lower order’s lack of contribution and poor fielding, including multiple dropped catches and misfields. Shubman Gill’s team will aim to recover and perform strongly in the second Test.
