Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect. There were reports of sacking and removal from the Indian team before the tour of England, and the veteran decided to make a move before the national selectors took a tough stance against him. He has been underperforming for a long time, and the twin series failures against New Zealand and Australia sealed his fate. The five wise men of Indian cricket want to groom a new leader in red-ball cricket, and they are looking at various options, but Rohit was not in their scheme of things.
They informed the BCCI about their decision, and the top brass was ready to back them. Although Rohit led India to success in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, it was enough to allow him to play Test cricket.
Meanwhile, former Indian player Navjot Singh Sidhu has paid tribute to the retired cricketer.
“Kapil has gone, Gavaskar has gone, and now Rohit Sharma is going out with a shine. He left T20Is without making a noise. He hit Mitchell Starc for sixes in the World Cup while Virat Kohli played a match-winning knock in the final against South Africa. Still, they announced their retirement. You can’t get everything in your life,” Sidhu said.
“You can’t get everything in life. Rohit Sharma has been a game changer, and his 12 Test hundreds have come in a winning cause. He has left his imprints, and his name will always be remembered. Rohit will remain in our memories. He was an institution and a good human being. He has earned the respect he gets from the former and current players,” he added.
The 37-year-old played 67 Tests, scoring 4301 runs at an average of 40.57, with the help of 12 tons and 18 fifties.
