Described as the “adventure capital of the UK”, a visit to the Lake District is a great destination for explorers craving a more active holiday this year. When visiting the Lake District for the first time, which spans over 912 square miles, where should you visit first?

One of the most popular starting points is Windermere, which is home to the largest lake across the park. Spreading across 10.5 miles and 219 feet deep, there’s lots of space for boating activities and water sports on the beautiful lake. Lake Windermere is a great place for canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding and rowing; then there’s the cruise for a more leisurely view of the rolling hills.

Nearby, there is Orrest Head – a scenic walking trail featuring panoramic views of the lake and woodlands.

In Windermere town, just a mile away from the gorgeous lake, there is a wonderful variety of eateries and pubs to enjoy.

Moreover, the historical town is near The World of Beatrix Potter, a visitor attraction where the author’s enchanted stories are brought to life.

Additional attractions include the Lakes Aquarium – where you can see sharks, piranhas, and otters – and Wray Castle.

In a YouTube video about the Lake District, travel enthusiast Robbie Roams goes through the top 10 must-see locations when exploring the area.

And coming in at number one is Windermere, which is described as a “great base for exploring [the] central area of the Lake District”.

Robbie mentioned how this popular destination can reveal to travellers some of the “treasures” that can be found when exploring the Lake District.

And, as many can expect, once you’ve done one part of the national park, there will be a growing desire to see more.

There’s the bustling town of Ambleside, near Windermere, which is a great place to visit.

Additional must-see locations include Coniston, Keswick and Derwentwater, Grasmere and Redial, and Ullswater and Glenridding.

There’s also Langdale Valley, the Northern Lakes, and Wastwater – so there’s plenty to see.

Whether you take a long trip to travel across the Lake District or keep coming back for more over the years, the Lake District is a destination you must visit at least once.
