“Greatest Team”: Ricky Ponting Reveals His Masterplan for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025
Ricky Ponting aims to build the greatest Punjab Kings team in IPL history ahead of their opening match. PBKS, who have never won the IPL, came close in 2014 but fell short. Since then, they’ve failed to reach the playoffs.
Under Ponting’s leadership, the team revamped their squad in the IPL 2025 auction, adding players like Shreyas Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Arshdeep Singh while welcoming back Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis. Ponting emphasized the team’s goal of winning the IPL and creating a lasting legacy.
“The primary goal of the team is to win the IPL title. I made it clear from day one when I joined the camp in Dharamshala that our mission is to build and become the greatest Punjab Kings team ever. We’re on a journey, and we understand that greatness doesn’t come overnight – it’s something we have to create actively,” Ponting said.
“Winning is a mindset. If we show up ready to play, and the opposition does the same, it’s not just a game—it’s a battle. If they want to beat us, they’ll have to take something from us, and I’m not willing to let anyone take anything away from me or my team,” he added.
Ponting also highlighted several players who have impressed him early on, naming Priyansh Arya, Suryansh Shedge, and Musheer Khan as standouts.
“I believe Priyansh Arya has the potential to become a key player for us, particularly as an opening batter. He’s got a lot of promise, and depending on how we balance our overseas players, he could really make an impact. Suryansh Shedge has also stood out in training, and I’m impressed by what he brings to the table.”
“Musheer Khan has truly stood out with his energy and positive attitude. He has such an infectious attitude, and he’s already made a significant impact on the group. His enthusiasm and spirit have been a pleasure to work with,” Ponting concluded.
PBKS will kick off their campaign against Gujarat Titans on March 25.
