Spain’s ‘hidden gem’ resort is 21C in April with £33 return flights | Beach Holidays | Travel
admin March 19, 2025 ArticleWhile the UK is just beginning to welcome spring, many European destinations are already enjoying warmer climes, making them ideal for an Easter break or a term-time holiday for those without school-age children. Alicante, situated on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, is a favourite among travellers, whether they’re seeking a beach retreat or a cultural escape.
The city is easy to get to from all main UK airports, with return flights from £33 from London in April. With temperatures reaching up to 21C right now, Alicante is perfect for those yearning for some early spring sunshine. Visitors can unwind on Alicante’s stunning beaches, such as Playa de la Albufereta, or take a trip up to Castillo de Santa Barbara, the imposing fortress that dominates the city skyline.
However, if you venture further along the coast from Alicante, you’ll stumble upon a unique resort that’s been dubbed a ‘hidden gem’, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Nestled between Alicante and Benidorm, Villajoyosa – or ‘joyful town’ – offers a distinct holiday experience. It’s just a 40-minute bus ride from Alicante, or an hour by tram, with services running frequently.
Villajoyosa is known for its vibrant multi-coloured buildings that line the town’s golden beach. Historically, these bright hues were believed to help fishermen spot their homes while out at sea.
Last year, this charming town was crowned Europe’s ‘best hidden gem’ by the guide European Best Destinations. It’s a title well-deserved, as it often gets overshadowed by tourists flocking to more popular Spanish destinations like Alicante or Benidorm.
But Villajoyosa offers more than just its vibrant buildings. As you’d anticipate from a town nestled on the Costa Blanca, it boasts several stunning beaches. The main beach, Playa la Villajoyosa, also known as Playa Centro, is framed by the town’s colourful houses.
For those seeking a more private retreat, Playa de Bol Nou is an ideal choice. This pebble beach is tucked away between cliffs, offering a sense of seclusion. Alternatively, Playa El Paraiso, lined with palm trees and blessed with beautiful azure-blue waters, is another fantastic option.
Villajoyosa has another feather in its cap – it’s the birthplace of one of Spain’s most renowned chocolate brands. The town is home to several chocolate factories that welcome visitors, including Chocolates Valor, which opened its doors in 1831.
So don’t be surprised if you detect a hint of chocolate in the air while sunbathing on the beach.
