Beautiful natural gem in UK is now an overcrowded tourist destinati | UK | Travel
admin March 6, 2025 ArticleA serene national park in Wales is being overrun by eager tourists, transforming its peaceful landscapes into bustling hotspots that could be damaging to the natural beauty of the area.
Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (formerly known as the Brecon Beacons) was named by The New York Times as one of the Best Places to Visit in 2024. Previously a well-kept secret among locals and a haven for its sheep population, its popularity could be causing the popular hiking destination more harm than good, according to Forbes. Situated just 30 miles north of Cardiff, the park saw a massive influx of four million visitors last year, prompting authorities to implement additional measures to manage the crowds.
Renowned for its rolling hills, rugged mountains, picturesque waterfalls and diverse wildlife the park covers approximately 520 square miles.
A haven for hikers, nature lovers and outdoor adventurers, extra buses and tour guides have been deployed to accommodate the increasing numbers.
The real challenge for park officials, however, has been addressing inappropriate behaviour displayed by some tourists. It is the mass arrival of influencers that is one of the parks most pressing concerns at this time.
Determined to capture the perfect shot at the park’s picturesque settings, officials have had to remind visitors to respect ‘countryside morals.’
This follows reports of tourists stripping down for selfies in the waterfalls or treating the national park as if it were a seaside resort.
Many have also arrived ill-prepared, donning flip-flops and swimsuits despite the park’s notoriously unpredictable weather and rugged terrain.
Bannau Brycheiniog is home to Pen y Fan, South Wales’ highest peak with breathtaking views it is no wonder that the area is such a popular destination.
It is also home to the stunning cascades of Waterfall Country and one of the UK’s best Dark Sky Reserves for stargazing.
In order to maintain its incredible natural beauty, authorities are now not only focused on limiting visitor numbers but also on ensuring that those who do come treat the natural environment with the respect it deserves.
As efforts to balance tourism with conservation continue, locals hope that the park’s natural beauty remains intact despite its newfound global fame.
