Europe’s ‘sunniest coastal city’ in Spain you must visit | Travel News | Travel
admin February 20, 2025 ArticleCádiz, a jewel in Spain’s crown with over 3,024 hours of sunshine a year, has been crowned Europe’s sunniest coastal city yet remains uncharted territory for almost half the British population.
Despite soaking up an impressive average of eight daily hours of sunlight, 43% of Britons are oblivious to its existence, according to research by Scenic Cruises.
Dr Gurpreet Kaur enlightened Scenic about the health advantages of sun-kissed climes, stating: “Sunshine exposure boosts dopamine levels naturally, while quality cuisine offers essential nutrients and enjoyment. Walking reduces cortisol, helping to regulate dopamine, and clean air enhances brain function.
“Studies have also shown that green spaces encourage mindfulness, which helps to increase dopamine. Together, these elements create destinations that refresh and elevate mood.”
Brimming with history, the ancient Phoenician-founded Cádiz is perched on the Andalusian Atlantic shoreline, boasting pristine beaches, rich culinary delights, and nestled nearby is the UNESCO-listed Doñana National Park, a haven for nature enthusiasts.
Cádiz, a city brimming with character, boasts castles, watchtowers and charming buildings adorned with balconies.
The cityscape is further enhanced by sailing clubs and historic districts such as El Pópulo, the medieval town of La Viña, and a traditional fishing district.
It also houses numerous significant religious structures that reflect Andalusian spirituality. As the base for the Spanish Navy, the port of Cádiz flourished in the 16th century, and now features over 100 watchtowers, including the Torre Tavira, traditionally used for ship spotting, reports the Mirror.
Along the waterfront stands an 18th-century Cathedral with a dome, showcasing baroque and neoclassical elements.
The city’s most renowned beach Playa de La Caleta, located in the old town, offers stunning sunset views over the Atlantic, with small fishing boats gently swaying on the water.
For those interested in the city’s fishing heritage, a visit to Mercado Central de Abastos, Spain’s oldest covered market built in 1838, is a must.
With over 150 stalls, the market offers everything from sushi and fresh tuna to snails and fried fish, along with fresh meat, fruit and vegetables.
To reach Cádiz, one can fly to Seville and then drive or take a train to Cádiz, both options taking approximately an hour and 20 minutes.
March flights are available for as low as £62 return, with easyJet from London Gatwick Airport (departing March 11 and returning March 19).
