“Strong rapport with Gambhir”: Dinesh Karthik highlights the main reason behind the success of Team India’s top batter
Suryakumar Yadav was appointed as the T20I captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the format after the 2024 T20 World Cup. Initially, there was some skepticism surrounding the decision, particularly since all-rounder Hardik Pandya was overlooked for the role. However, under Suryakumar’s leadership, Team India has enjoyed a period of success, winning series against Bangladesh, South Africa, and Sri Lanka in recent months.
Dinesh Karthik believes that Suryakumar’s strong relationship with head coach Gautam Gambhir has played a key role in his development as a captain.
“He’s been performing really well. So far, he’s made the right tactical decisions. Initially, I thought there might be an issue if they didn’t play two fast bowlers, but they’ve managed very well. Hardik has bowled well, and the spinners have controlled the middle overs. I also believe he shares a strong rapport with Gambhir, and they have a good understanding,” Dinesh Karthik stated on Cricbuzz.
On the topic of Mohammed Shami, Karthik emphasized the importance of better communication between the NCA, Team India, and the media regarding the pacer’s recovery journey. Shami made his return to international cricket during the third T20I against England in Rajkot, but his path to recovery was riddled with setbacks and communication issues that delayed his progress.
“Regarding Shami, they’ve been mindful of his workload. I really hope there’s clearer communication between the NCA, Team India, and the media. Sometimes, things get miscommunicated, like when we all assumed Shami was going to Australia, but he didn’t. However, I’m confident he’ll be fit and ready for Dubai,” Karthik added.
Shami was expected to be fit in time for the Border-Gavaskar series, but despite making a return to the domestic circuit with Bengal and playing consistently, the team management did not consider him ready for red-ball cricket at that point.
