Rohit Sharma, Ajit Agarkar, Gautam Gambhir and the BCCI officials met in Mumbai on Saturday to review the team’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Down Under. India lost the series 1-3, registering their second consecutive defeat, having surrendered to New Zealand at home.
According to Dainik Jagran, Rohit refused to leave the captaincy and told the board officials to pick his successor.
He promised to give his full support to the team’s future skipper. Rohit will continue to lead the Men in Blue in one-day internationals, with the decision on his replacement to be taken after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan and Dubai.
Earlier, Suryakumar Yadav replaced Rohit as T20I captain after the latter announced retirement from the format following the team’s success in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
During the meeting, Jasprit Bumrah’s name was discussed to take over the captaincy. He led India to a win in the first Test at the Optus Stadium. Bumrah returned as captain in the Sydney Test but was injured midway.
However, the selectors and the BCCI are not sure of his him leading the team, considering his injury issues and workload management. The officials reserves the verdict on Bumrah for later.
