This beautiful town in the south of England is perfect for taking a winter walk and for exploring its historic streets.
Rye is a medieval town in East Sussex, it has cobblestone streets and well-preserved Tudor architecture which is fascinating to admire as you wander around.
You’ll find the town at the top of a hill, it is surrounded by defensive walls – a sign of its past.
From the top, you can enjoy incredible views of the surrounding countryside and the town.
A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “Rye is a medieval town that feels like it’s straight out of a storybook, complete with cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, and ancient inns.
“Explore landmarks like Mermaid Street and Rye Castle Museum. Rye is easily accessible by train from London, making it a perfect day trip.”
Ypres Tower is one of Rye’s oldest buildings, built in the 14th century to protect the town from invaders.
You should also aim to see Camber Castle and St Mary’s Church, which dates back to 1020 AD.
Mermaid Street is an iconic part of the town, it has been called one of England’s most picturesque streets.
It is home to colourful houses, Georgian and Tudor buildings and its postcard-perfect to see in real life.
A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “A must see little village with quaint little shops and lots of history. Great places to eat and pubs to check out. Go early as it has a lot of tourists later in the day.”
Rye is surrounded by beautiful countryside where you can find a variety of walking and cycling trails if you’re seeking adventure in the colder months.
Taking a walk along the beach at Camber Sands is a must-do, it is just over 10 minutes away by car and you won’t be disappointed.
One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “Beautiful clean beach with clear water. Fabulous parking. Excellent lifeguard service reminding everyone to move back when the tide is rolling in.
“We had such a lovely 3 hours in the sunshine and everyone was friendly.”
