Croatia is known for its many summer hotspots, party places and historically steeped towns that become swarmed with tourists during the high season.

While well-known cities like Dubrovnik and Split continue to draw crowds during winter, there are also lesser-explored regions that offer unique charm and scenic beauty— without the masses.

That is the case of one charming little island that has been listed number two in VIP Holiday Booker’s list of most underrated destinations in Croatia.

With an area population of 5,950 and a county population of 115,564, Korcula achieved an Instagram score of 255,000 and a TikTok score of 6,284, according to the website’s weighted ranking algorithm that factored in metrics as local population, social media presence, and overall popularity.

Korcula offers some of the clearest waters in the Adriatic, with many pebble beaches and secluded coves.

Some popular beaches include Lumbarda (famous for its sandy beaches), Vaja Beach, and Bilin Zal Beach near the town.

The island is covered in vineyards, olive groves, and pine forests, making it a paradise for nature lovers.

It’s perfect for hiking or cycling through lush landscapes, with trails offering breathtaking views of the Adriatic and nearby islands.

The town of Korcula is surrounded by impressive medieval city walls and several defensive towers. The most famous is St Blaise Tower, which offers panoramic views over the town and the sea.

It’s also famously claimed to be the birthplace of Marco Polo, the Venetian explorer, merchant and writer who travelled through Asia along the Silk Road between 1271 and 1295

While the exact location of his birthplace is debated, there’s a museum dedicated to his life and voyages in the town, with exhibits showcasing his adventurous spirit.

Visitors were left in awe of this lesser-known island and the beauty that surrounds it, taking to Tripadvisor to praise its walkability and historical charm.

Faithfultraveler said: “Korcula is amazing! We really enjoyed the day we walked around the island, and learned that Marco Polo might have come from here as Korcula was part of Venice in his lifetime.”

Nwaynesworld added: “Beautiful island off the coast of Croatia. We arrived via a TP Line ferry from Dubrovnik (two hours).

“Old Town Korcula is amazing. Ancient buildings surrounded by a stone wall. Stunning sea views and many small public beaches.”

Timothy P highlighted: “Lovely small Old town area. Good for a walk through followed by a meal somewhere on the sea front. Also a small pebbly beach on the tip where one can swim.”
