Ravi Shastri is credited for changing the mindset of the Indian players when it comes to winning in SENA countries. India defeated Australia twice Down Under during his coaching tenure. The sub-continent nation also won in England and South Africa and became the most dominating team in international cricket.
There was a time when such wins were very rare as India were the poor travelers and their matches were one-sided. However, the last few years have seen India winning in SENA countries, with bowlers giving consistent performances. Shastri spoke about the change and even slammed the overboard celebrations in the past.
“There were huge celebrations when India won a Test match in England, Australia or other countries. Everyone went overboard, which was surprising. Instead of going for a series win, victory in just one game gave them satisfaction. This was not nice,” he said on Star Sports.
“The problem with some of the best Indian teams in the past was the combination. The playing XI had four regular bowlers, and making the batting unit strong was given more importance.
“When I became the head coach, my focus was on finding pacers who can take wickets for us in the overseas countries. Virat was on the same page and out investment in the fast bowlers helped the team in winning the matches. We played with with five regular bowlers,” he added.
