Dinesh Karthik recently lauded an Indian player for his bowling in the shortest format of the game. He wants the selectors to pick Varun Chakravarthy for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
He commented after the mystery spinner took five wickets for India in the second T20I against South Africa. Varun was unplayable, and his wickets included the prized scalps of dangerous David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen. He single-handedly put India in a winning position, but a valuable partnership between Tristan Stubbs and Gerald Coetzee took the Proteas to a win by three wickets.
Varun is enjoying the second stint of his career after being wholly ignored following the team’s disastrous campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. He couldn’t do well in the UAE and paid a heavy price. However, he picked up 19 wickets in 18 matches for KKR in IPL 2024, and the selectors recalled him for the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. He was retained in the squad for the Bangladesh matches.
“If India don’t pick VARUN CHAKRAVARTHY for the Champions Trophy, then they are making a grave error. Outstanding Bowler he is turning out to be,” Dinesh Karthik wrote on X.
In 11 T20Is for the national team, he has picked up 15 wickets at an average of 16.46 and an economy of 5.81. The Champions Trophy will be played next year in February and March. Pakistan is the host nation of the ICC tournament.
