‘Underrated’ Greek Island is 26x less busy than Santorini | Europe | Travel
admin November 11, 2024 ArticleSifnos is an appealing destination in the Cyclades known for its beautiful landscape, rich history, and vibrant culture.
Compared to more bustling hotspots, Sifnos offers a more laid-back and authentic Greek island experience. Around 126,000 people visit Sifnos each year, which sounds a lot compared to its population of just 2,600 people.
But to put things into perspective, more than two million stop off at Mykonos and approximately 3.4 million travel to Santorini each year. That makes Sifnos around 26 times less visited than nearby islands.
You don’t have to compromise when it comes to natural beauty, either. Sifnos offers numerous picturesque beaches with clear blue waters, such as Platis Gialos, Vathi, and Kamares, which are perfect for relaxation and water activities.
The island features a network of well-marked hiking trails that provide stunning views of the landscape, including terraced hills, olive groves, and traditional Cycladic architecture.
Visitors enjoy exploring Sifnos’ charming villages, such as Apollonia, with its narrow alleys and whitewashed houses, and Kastro, known for its medieval architecture and panoramic sea views.
And one of these tourists recently took to TikTok to rave about their experience – branding Sifnos the “most underrated island in Greece”.
The vlogger, known as Totally Avalon, praised the destination for its “amazing” food, “incredibly blue” water and “unforgettable” landscape.
She stayed in the north of the island and hired a car so she could have total freedom to explore – and recommends booking both accommodation and car rental in advance to avoid missing out.
Sifnos is famous for its culinary tradition, offering delicious local dishes like chickpea soup and mastelo (lamb stew). But instead of visiting restaurants famous on social media, Totally Avalon recommends asking locals for their recommendations.
She gushed that she “can’t wait to go back” – and people in the comments section were in agreement that the holiday looked amazing.
One TikTok user gushed: “Stunning”. Another said: “This was our favourite island”. And another added: “Looks incredible”.
Tempted to book a trip yourself? To get to Sifnos, you should fly into Athens. Plane tickets from London can be snapped up from an affordable £44.
Then, take a taxi, bus or train to Piraeus and catch a ferry to Sifnos from around £25. While the high-speed boat trip takes just two to three hours, traditional ferries tend to take five hours.
