Former batter Aakash Chopra has said that India should open with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli if they want to follow the same template in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. India will take on Afghanistan in the second T20I at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on January 14.
India beat Afghanistan by 6 wickets in Mohali to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Kohli, who missed the first match for personal reasons, has joined the team.
Chopra said Kohli plays freely in powerplay overs. Kohli was the top run-scorer in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
“If you see the entire ODI World Cup, Virat Kohli scored a lot of runs while following a certain template m. He doesn’t hit fours and sixes from the start in the T20 cricket. If he has to score runs at a strike rate of 150, he can only do it in the powerplay,” Aakash Chopra said.
He further said that if Indin wants to follow the same template, it is better if the two start opening the batting from the second T20I. Kohli has opened the batting in T20Is for the Men in Blue in 9 games, scoring 400 runs, including a hundred and two half-centuries.
“In New York or the West Indies, the pitches will be slow and you will have the best opportunity to score runs in the first six overs. So you want Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to be together from.the start. If you want to open with them in the World Cup, start it now,” he added.
