Sachin Tendulkar holds several world records in international cricket. Some of his landmarks are impossible to break. The veteran played 200 Tests and hit 100 centuries across formats. With 51 tons in red-ball cricket and 49 in ODIs, he was sensational with the bat. Even though Virat Kohli has surpassed Sachin in terms of most hundreds in the fifty-over format, the former cricketer is still the best.
Meanwhile, Sachin’s milestone of most runs in Test cricket is in danger. Joe Root is the front-runner to go past the legendary batter. Root is behind by 3500 runs and he is 33. Joe Root’s march towards Tendulkar’s record has made English media and crickets excited.
Michael Vaughan claimed that Root overtaking the Indian batter will make Test format interesting because the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would try its best to ensure that an Indian player again reclaims the top spot. Michael’s statement hasn’t impressed Sunil Gavaskar, who slammed England.
“This business of India bashing has to be countered with aggression because they understand this language. I heard someone saying that it would be good for the longest format if Joe Root overtook Sachin’s all-time record for most runs and centuries in Test cricket,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.
“What is wrong with Test cricket if Sachin Tendulkar is the holder of these two records and how will five-day format get batter if Joe Root surpasses Sachin Tendulkar? They are trying to make a perception that BCCI doesn’t take care of Test cricket,” he further wrote.
India have already played the two finals of the World Test Championship. The sub-continent team will play 10 Tests in the next few months. “It is ridiculous thinking as India are playing a lot of Test cricket. The success of the Indian Premier League doesn’t mean BCCI has lost interest in Test format.”
