Zaheer Khan is in talks with Lucknow Super Giants for the mentor role. He is likely to replace Gautam Gambhir, who left for Kolkata in 2023, and Morne Morkel, who is now the bowling coach of Team India. Both Gambhir and Morkel, the franchise’s bowling coach for three seasons, have joined the Indian team’s coaching staff.
Zaheer is being considered for the role that was with Gambhir, and the veteran could also prove handy for the bowlers. The legendary cricketer was the Director of Cricket at Mumbai Indians for several seasons and has experience managing a franchise.
Zaheer was also one of the candidates for the post of India’s bowling coach under Gambhir’s setup. He is renowned for mentoring young fast bowlers and played this role to perfection during his active days as a player with the national team.
Zaheer Khan didn’t join the Men in Blue as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) went ahead with Morne Morkel on Gambhir’s recommendation.
If Zaheer joins LSG, he will work with head coach Justin Langer and other coaches in the form of Adam Voges, Lance Klusener, and Jonty Rhodes.
Zaheer, who is 45, played 92 Test matches, 200 one-day internationals, 17 T20Is for India, and 100 IPL matches. He represented Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Mumbai Indians.
